Hey Anna, what's the little metal shed in the last picture?

That's an Anderson Shelter. They were given out to poor families (or richer ones could buy one) during the second world war. You buried it in your garden, then went and took shelter in it during an air raid, so that if they bombed your house, you'd survive. They're terribly small cramped things - a family or four or five would be expected to shelter an entire night in something that size! But they saved a lot of lives.

Thanks!
Are your buildings actual historic buildings that were relocated to the museum, or recreations?

They're real buildings. All of the buildings have been rescued from the threat of demolition or decay somewhere else, and brought to the museum to keep them safe for future generations. When the museum started it was all about presevering architecture of years gone by, so we didn't lose traditional building forms or ways of building. Some of the museum's buildings are full of "stuff" like the prefab, dressed to be in period. Some of them aren't; you'll see pictures of them as we work our way around the site. We've got a Tudor building (which was the first one they rescued) for example that's not really got much in it at all, it's just like a shell of a building.

Interesting... Where was this Prefab originally from?

Yes, I'd like to know that as well - are they physically deconstructed and reconstructed at AvonCroft? Where do you get the contents of the house - are they original to the house?

That would show off the architecture a lot more. When is it scheduled to get photographed?

Anna! You didn't include a picture of the dollhouse! And you know I love that. I'll remedy that later. Everyone needs to see it, it's cute. <3 The Prefab was from Yardley originally, which is in Birmingham. I think Sarah has the actual postcode somewhere or other... I can ask her to dig it out for you if you want! Most of the buildings are taken apart piece by piece and then put back together at the museum. Occassionally stuff comes in one piece; there's a fabulous picture on the panels on site of the Counting House in one piece on the back of a lowloader lorry! I'll make sure we snap a picture of the picture when we're photographing the Counting House. Sometimes we get contents with the buildings, but a lot of the bits and pieces are donated from all sorts of people. Especially in the prefab; we have things from lots of different people all together to recreate the feel of the early 1950s home. Looking at the prefab always makes me nostalgic... makes me think of my grandad's house.

You and Bea and your toys, lol.
I think the Merchant's House is down for early August? I've glanced at the full schedule, but I've really just been focussing on the immediate stuff. The Toll House is on next, which is a Victorian toll house from Little Malvern. It's really really cute, and dressed like the prefab is. But Victorian, obviously, not 1950s.

That sounds lovely, Victorian era things are always so eloquent looking... and any reason you didn't include the dollhouse picture? I would like to see that, a little window into the life of a 50's kid. No electronics, what did they do back then? Hahaha

Sorry! Clearly I'm overruled on the 1950s toys, lol.
I'll go see what toy pictures I can dig out of what we've taken... there are a few toys in there, I'll see what I can find pictures of. If I can't find some I'll go take some! lol

Leina, if you want the postcode I'll see about digging it out for you! I know I had it a while ago... it'll be in a folder somewhere.

Well...I said I was curious so here are some things I'm curious about. The book on the nightstand. The books beside what looks like a recliner of sorts. The items on top of the dresser. The card on the table. (Probably museum literature but I'm still curious) The items on the sink in the bathroom (They're supposed to be authentic right?). There is one cupboard that has a door open and some things inside, one of which looks like a newspaper. I'm not asking for pics of all of these, they're just the things that caught my eye for one reason or another.
